Earth Star
This amazing species belongs to a group of fungi known as 'Gasteroid'. Other species include puffballs and earth balls. Earth stars depend on raindrops for spore dispersal. The 'papery' ball (Endoperidium) which contains the spores acts like a small bellows, ejecting clouds of spores when struck by a raindrop. I think the star shaped base (Exoperidium) looks like it's been cut-out of pastry dough! Earth stars are both beautiful and fascinating.
